Djalma Corrêa visited the state of Sergipe in 1974. On that occasion, he recorded the traditional popular demonstrations in the cities of Sergipe, Japaratuba and Laranjeiras, such as Cacumbi, Traieira, São Gonçalo, Zabumba, Chegança, Besides registering some terreiros of the State.
Both in Japaratuba and in Laranjeiras Djalma made records of the Cacumbi groups. The cacumbi, as well as Traiera, is a popular Afro-Brazilian manifestation of homage to the Congos Kings and praise of the black saints, Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Benedict. These groups leave in courtship through the streets of the cities on January 6, ending the Christmas cycle. The Cacumbi also leaves on Christmas day and other celebrations in towns and villages of the region. Although it does not present a dramatization, the procession represents the fight between two kings, a black and an Indian. And on the kings’s day there is always the ritual moment of coronation of the King and Queen, after Mass, outside the church, beginning the Reign that lasts for a year.
In Sergipe there are also groups of Cacumbi in the counties of Riachuelo and Lagarto and in other states like Santa Catarina, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro the same manifestation is found with some variations and can take the names of Quicumbi, Cacumbi, Catumbi and Ticumbi.
In Japaratuba, Djalma recorded the group headed by Arquino Vieira Santos, the Master Curau. The group had 20 members, organized in two lanyards wearing typical clothes: printed shirt, white trousers and straw hat decorated with mirrors. The master and the countermaster wore swords at the waist. There were still the king and queen and their secretaries and secretaries. The musical part consisted of two ounces (large cuica type), 2 boxes, 4 tambourines, several ganzas and 2 choirs. The pace is strong and remarkable!
